Psychotherapy
We provide individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy. Our staff have flexible schedules and provide morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. Many of our staff also work on Saturdays. Sessions are typically 50 minutes long, though there are times with couples and families we may ask for additional time to meet. Groups are typically one and one-half hours and usually meet weekly.
During a first session, our staff will discuss the reason(s) for therapy and, in addition to learning about our clients, will discuss how they might approach the therapy process. Clients are encouraged to ask questions and to participate in the process of establishing goals and regularly discussing progress toward goals.
We work with people from various cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. We also work with people of all abilities, genders, and sexual orientations. Many of our staff also have strong backgrounds working with families, vulnerable youth, and individuals who have been impacted by trauma, violence, and addictions.
Training

We are frequently called upon by other psychotherapists and community agencies to provide training to their staff. We will develop specialized training based on individual and/or agency requests or agencies may select from a comprehensive list of training we have already prepared. At times, we have been asked upon to develop extensive training programs that we plan, implement, and evaluate.
The training and workshops we provide are typically a combination of experiential activities, discussion, lecture, and application. We incorporate principles of adult learning in all our presentations.
A sampling of training titles/topics we have offered over the course of the last year includes:
- Contemporary Practice with Youth Exposed to Violence, Trauma, & Loss
- Clinical Practice with Same Sex Couples
- When Talking Isn't Enough: Creative, Expressive, and Activity-Based Interventions
- On Being an Ethical Rebel: Ethics and Boundaries in Child Welfare Practice
- Angry Youth and Anger Management
- Culturally Competent Clinical Practice
- Practice with LGBT Survivors of Childhood Trauma
- LGBT Identity Development Across the Lifespan
- Human Development, Extra-developmental Events, and De-Railments
- Attachment, Trust, and Relationships
- Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Traumatization
- Mindfulness and Stress-Reduction
We also offer a Post Graduate Fellowship program for new therapists. Consistent with Live Oak's mission, the Post Graduate Fellowship Program (PGFP) provides opportunities for new professionals to gain experience in providing psychotherapy, training, and consultation to individuals, families, organizations, and communities. The PGFP offers fellows increasing levels of responsibility over the course of two years. Upon conclusion of the program, fellows will be able to:
- Provide systemically focused psychotherapy to individuals, couples, families, and groups with particular expertise in services to lesbians, gay men, families and youth at risk;
- Provide training on a variety of topics to audiences in mental health settings, child welfare settings, youth services settings, and homeless services settings
- Provide consultation to individuals and organizations regarding program development, implementation, and evaluation
Supervision Our skilled clinicians routinely provide supervision to other professionals and students. For some professionals, supervision is sometimes provided to ensure the supervisee engages in effective practice while accumulating the hours necessary prior to taking an exam for licensure. Other times, we provide supervision in an on-going way to professionals who choose to receive external supervision to their private practices or supervision in addition to that which they receive in their place of employment. We provide individual and group supervision. We also contract with agencies to provide supervision at their sites.
