Becoming Safely Embodied: A 12-Week Skills Group for Trauma Survivors (Groups for women forming now)

As survivors of traumatic life events, we may experience our body as a source of pain and ill-health, as well as a constant reminder of our troubling past. While others around us seem to know how to use their bodies to relax and revitalize, we may struggle to avoid the turmoil of having a physical self. Designed by an expert trauma therapist, "Becoming Safely Embodied" is a 12-week step-by-step skills development group designed to help trauma survivors safely turn inward to uncover our own wisdom, clarity and calm. Here we will practice and expand our internal foundation of grounded presence through the skills of: meditation and concentration; belongingness; separating the past from the present; identifying thoughts, feelings and body sensations; discovering an internal wise self; and carving out a new path. Weekly group meetings as well as an initial meeting are offered at the cost of $50/session.

For more information, please contact Jaime Henry-Juravic at 773.880.1310, x 88 or via e-mail at jhenryjuravic@liveoakchicago.com.

  • Mindfully Connected 2012
    A Saturday Morning Mindfulness Series

    Monthly, 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Mindfulness practices allow us to develop our "internal observer" by noticing, without judgment, the activity in our bodies and minds. The Mindfully Connected series consists of 6 workshops, meeting once monthly, in which participants will learn and practice new skills geared toward being more fully present in the moment, through non-judgmental awareness of thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. The Mindfully Connected series is offered as an introduction to mindfulness practices and will cover a different topic each month.

The series will begin in January 2012 and will meet one Saturday of the month from 10:00-11:30am. The dates and topics for each month are listed below. Attendance at all groups is recommended, but not required, for participation in the series. Mindfully Connected is offered at no cost as part of the larger Connected series at Live Oak. However, pre-registration is required.

However, feelings of anxiety often deter individuals from joining groups. This workshop will focus on non-verbal techniques that are geared toward relieving feelings of stress and despair. In a quietly safe environment, participants will be encouraged to experiment with expressing and healing in new, creative, and non-threatening ways.

The next Wildflowers workshop is in the process of being scheduled. The fee for this workshop is $20 and pre-registration is required as space is limited. To register, please contact Meghan Johnson Westmacott, CTRS at 773.880.1310, ext. 77626 or e-mail at mjohnson@liveoakchicago.com.

Gay Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

Rather than telling and re-telling painful histories, this group focuses on understanding the effects of childhood sexual abuse; how each man has learned to survive and how past survival strategies may not be working like they once did. Group members will explore new and more effective coping strategies for living more productively and with a greater sense of balance and peace. Topics addressed in the group include: establishing safety individually and in the context of relationships; negotiating boundaries; dealing with anger/loss/rage; dealing with addictive and/or compulsive behaviors; learning to identify and manage anxiety; understanding how being gay and being a survivor may or may not be related; and incorporating or re-incorporating a sense of spirituality into daily life. This is a closed group (starts and ends with the same 6-8 men) and typically lasts for 30 consecutive weeks. It is offered only once per year.
