Values and Philosophy
Difficult past experiences may intrude on the present in ways that make it difficult to remain grounded in the here and now. Current life situations can also challenge our groundedness. Loss, acute or chronic trauma, problematic relationships or difficult life transitions often create unmanageable thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. We may find ourselves wondering why we are not the healthy and integrated self that we wish to be.

The process of psychotherapy fosters attention to past and present areas of distress without becoming further overwhelmed. By developing both awareness and acceptance of all aspects of mind and body, we can discover our authentic self.

Training and Experience
I am currently completing a postgraduate clinical fellowship at Live Oak where my focus is on incorporating body-centered psychotherapy with my existing training in Marriage and Family therapy. I work with older adolescents, adults, families and couples. I am also the Clinical Coordinator at PEER Services, an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility for adults, adolescents and families. I received my training in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Family Institute at Northwestern University and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Individual Psychotherapy
The foundation of my work rests on my belief in the healing nature of the therapeutic relationship. I believe that this must first be established before further healing can occur. In addition, I incorporate a belief in the meaningful relationship between people and the numerous systems within which they interact: family, friends, workplace, and community. Together, we will explore the impact of these systems on well-being, and we will also explore past experiences that have continued to have an impact on the present. We will work collaboratively to develop a sense of curiosity about yourself as well as a sense of hope and confidence in your ability to embody a healthy and integrated self. My background in movement and the arts adds an additional focus to my work: on the relationship of mind and body. For clients who are interested in incorporating this approach, we may practice mindfulness techniques as part of our work together.

Group Facilitation
Beginning in February 2010, I will facilitate a once-monthly psychoeducation group called Mindfully Connected. As part of the larger Connected Series at Live Oak, "Mindfully Connected" will explore strategies for incorporating mindfulness practices into our daily lives; from basic breathing techniques to mindful eating, mindful movement and managing distressing emotions. This workshop will cover basic concepts and techniques of mindfulness rather than advanced meditation practices. Please refer to the "Groups" page of this website for further information on the series, including topics, pre-registration and dates.

We are a group of psychotherapists and consultants who provide counseling and educational services that enhance the emotional and psychological well being of individuals, families, organizations and communities.

We bring to our work decades of experience in clinical practice. Our longevity and success derive from the inspirational courage of our clients, our deep commitment to learning, and a strength-based philosophy that fosters growth, strengthens identity, and promotes real and lasting change.

The following principles inform our work:
  • We recognize the uniqueness of each individual.
  • We are goal-oriented.
  • We employ a strength-based approach that begins by respecting the courage it takes to attempt change.
  • We recognize that real and lasting change requires action.
  • We understand, recognize, and incorporate the interrelated nature of mind, body, and brain.
  • We are systems-oriented.
  • We establish a partnership based on mutual accountability and trust.
  • We recognize the harm that comes from discrimination and stigma, and therefore practice psychotherapy, consultation, and training that affirms the value of difference.
